...................................................................... Dr. Susan Scrimshaw Addresses Rensselaer County League about Leadership (NOTE: Click on "Photos" above to see photos of Dr. Scrimshaw and others at the Rensselaer League's 2010 Annual Meeting.) Dr. Susan Scrimshaw, President of The Sage Colleges, spoke to Rensselaer League members at their recent annual meeting and shared leadership lessons she has assembled from her life experiences. She peppered her list of lessons with personal anecdotes about growing up the eldest of five children -- one girl and four boys. The family was full of strong-minded individuals, including her demure, suffragette grandmother who once chained herself to a hydrant demanding the right to vote for women. Here are some of Dr. Scrimshaw's lessons: ~ Look for leadership opportunities. ~ Remember life is never fair. Make the best of every challenge. ~ Aim to get a job done. Don't seek to take credit when something goes right or assign blame when it doesn't. ~ Figure out how to motivate people, rather than ordering them around. ("You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.") ~ Be organized and keep track of your things, including your ideas. ~ Choose your battles. Know when to speak out and when not to. ~ Be curious. In a difficult circumstance, don't just react; remain calm and analyze the situation. ~ Try to understand and respect the views of others. Get to know people with whom you disagree. Disagreeing isn't always bad; it often leads to better decisions. ~ Never embarass anyone. ~ Take risks. If you don't shoot the ball, there's no chance you'll ever hit the basket. Rensselaer League Assists Students in their Study of Government This has been a banner year for the Rensselaer League in terms of working with young people. Students Inside Albany. Bob and Mary Stierer Government and Community Service Award Given to Troy High Student. He has participated in many clubs and activities, notably the Troy YMCA's Youth and Government Program, the school's Environmental Club (President), Key Club and the National Honor Society. Michael plans to pursue government studies at Cornell. George O'Connor, longtime friend of the Stierers, presented the award. Diversity Policy Adopted At the Rensselaer Leagues's recent annual meeting, members adopted a new policy on diversity. While we have always followed the principles expressed in this policy, we hope to actively seek new opportunities to implement it. The adopted policy is: The League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County, in both its values and practices, is committed to inclusion and diversity. This means that there shall be no barriers to participation in any activity of the League on the basis of economic position, gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. We recognize that diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision-making. We believe inclusiveness enhances the organization’s ability to respond more effectively to changing conditions and needs. Beulah Bailey Thull, First President of Rensselaer LWV, Makes an Appearance Seventy-one years ago, Beulah Bailey Thull became the first president of the League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County.
