Dr. Susan Scrimshaw Addresses Rensselaer County League about Leadership

(NOTE: Click on "Photos" above to see photos of Dr. Scrimshaw and others at the Rensselaer League's 2010 Annual Meeting.)

Dr. Susan Scrimshaw, President of The Sage Colleges, spoke to Rensselaer League members at their recent annual meeting and shared leadership lessons she has assembled from her life experiences.  She peppered her list of lessons with personal anecdotes about growing up the eldest of five children -- one girl and four boys.  The family was full of strong-minded individuals, including her demure, suffragette grandmother who once chained herself to a hydrant demanding the right to vote for women.  Here are some of  Dr. Scrimshaw's lessons:

~ Look for leadership opportunities.

~ Remember life is never fair.  Make the best of every challenge.

~ Aim to get a job done.  Don't seek to take credit when something goes right or assign blame when it doesn't.

~ Figure out how to motivate people, rather than ordering them around. ("You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.")

~ Be organized and keep track of your things, including your ideas.

~ Choose your battles.  Know when to speak out and when not to.

~ Be curious.  In a difficult circumstance, don't just react; remain calm and analyze the situation.

~ Try to understand and respect the views of others. Get to know people with whom you disagree.  Disagreeing isn't always bad; it often leads to better decisions.

~ Never embarass anyone.

~ Take risks.  If you don't shoot the ball, there's no chance you'll ever hit the basket.

Rensselaer League Assists Students in their Study of Government

This has been a banner year for the Rensselaer League in terms of working with young people.

Students Inside Albany. We sent two high school students, Ashleigh Beer and Emily Gicewicz, from Averill Park High to the State League's 2010 Students Inside Albany Conference.  Both students, ninth graders, are active in their Key Club and show strong leadership potential.  Asleigh and Emily attended the Rensselaer League's annual meeting and shared a bit about their experiences.  They joined 30 other students sponsored by 25 local Leagues.

Bob and Mary Stierer Government and Community Service Award Given to Troy High Student.  For the second year, the Rensselaer League was pleased to present this award to graduating senior, Michael Gregg. Michael ranks 9th out of 325 in his class.  He has participated in many clubs and activities, notably the Troy YMCA's Youth and Government Program, the school's Environmental Club (President), Key Club and the National Honor Society.  Michael plans to pursue government studies at Cornell.  George O'Connor, longtime friend of the Stierers, presented the award.

Diversity Policy Adopted

At the Rensselaer Leagues's recent annual meeting, members adopted a new policy on diversity.  While we have always followed the principles expressed in this policy, we hope to actively seek new opportunities to implement it.  The adopted policy is:

The League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County, in both its values and practices, is committed to inclusion and diversity.  This means that there shall be no barriers to participation in any activity of the League on the basis of economic position, gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability.

We recognize that diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision-making.  We believe inclusiveness enhances the organization’s ability to respond more effectively to changing conditions and needs.

Beulah Bailey Thull, First President of Rensselaer LWV, Makes an Appearance

Seventy-one years ago, Beulah Bailey Thull became the first president of the League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County.  At the recent annual meeting of the Rensselear League, Beulah (aka Sandy Gull) made a special appearance.  Dressed in clothing from the forties with an elegant black hat, Beulah encouraged League members to keep on with the good fight.  Here are some tidbits about the life of this remarkable woman:

~ Degrees from Troy High School, Cornell University and the State Library School; graduate work at Columbia University
~ Active women’s suffragette and founding member of LWVNYS
~ Leading expert on tax policy
~ President of the Civil Service Employees Association
~ Speechwriter for Franklin D. Roosevelt when Governor of NYS
~ State Legislative Chair, NYS Federation of Women’s Clubs
~ Rensselaer County Historian
~ Winner of women’s preliminary sports car race, Watkins Glen, 1959 (at age 68) driving an Alpha Romeo (average speed 64.4 MPH)
