NEW INFORMATION: Recycle Unused Drugs! Through February 2, 2008, Price Chopper stores with pharmacies are accepting outdated prescriptions and OTC medications in their original containers. Unsafe disposal poses health hazards for humans, fish and wildlife -- Prozac and other drugs have been showing up in wildlife for some time. This is a way to protect your family, community and the environment.
The Price Chopper initiative is preceding SMARxT DISPOSAL, a federal initiative expected to be launched this year by the American Pharmacists Assn. and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This will be a nationwide campaign to re-educate the public about safe drug disposal protocols.
LWV Rensselaer County Local Program - 2007-08
Approved at the Annual Meeting in May, 2007
The League will support and advocate for the following:
1.) Local Government (County, City, Town, Village) operations, and County and City Charters that are consistent with LWV principles adopted at the National and State levels.
√ Government policies, programs and performance should provide for:
· Competent personnel with clear lines of responsibility,
· Coordination among various agencies and levels of government,
· Adequate financing,
· Effective enforcement, and
· Well-defined channels for citizen input.
√ Charter amendments at the county and city level should provide for:
Following each decennial census, the Commission should create a Districting Plan. The Commission should provide for meaningful community participation while developing the plan. The plan should adhere to criteria in NYS Election Law which requires that districts be as compact, contiguous and convenient as possible. Also, the plan, as far as practicable, should follow the principle of equal representation, both numerically and by number of legislators from each district. Single-member districts are considered to be the most prevalent and familiar to citizens and most likely to best represent constituencies having similar interests and concerns. The districting plan should be approved by the appropriate legislative body in accordance with the Iowa Plan which provides for up to three times for Legislative approval/disapproval before mandatory acceptance of the Commission's recommended plan.
√ Procedures in Troy’s City Government should conform to the Troy City Charter.
2.) Local Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) that are based on the LWV NYS Consensus on ATI and Encourage Community Study and Action Toward Development of a Local Restorative Justice Program.
3.) Solid Waste Management practices in the Capital District that include:
. Waste and toxicity reduction and
. Environmentally sound methods of recycling and reuse.
4.) Policies and programs that address global warming consistent with LWV principles adopted at the National and State levels.
